China says its Mars probe and accompanying rover are expected to land on the red planet sometime between Saturday and Wednesday Beijing time.
The China National Space Administration said the Tianwen-1 probe has collected a large amount of scientific data since entering Mars’ orbit on February 10 and the window for setting down on an icy area of the planet known as Utopia Planitia was determined by “current flying conditions”.
Named after the Chinese god of fire, Zhurong, the rover will stay in the lander for diagnostics tests for several days before rolling down a ramp to begin exploring for signs of life.

Israeli justice minister Benny Gantz has called on the chiefs of big social media platforms to quickly remove content from their sites that incites violence or spreads disinformation.
A spokesman for Mr Gantz said he told executives of Facebook and TikTok during a Zoom meeting on Thursday that the current round of violence is being “intentionally stirred through social media by extremist elements” sworn to damage Israel.
Mr Gantz called the current round of fighting “a moment of social emergency, and we expect your assistance”.

Denmark has begun excavating the decomposing bodies of some four million mink, for fear they will pollute drinking water or a bathing lake.
In November, Denmark culled all of its minks out of fears the animals could re-transmit coronavirus to humans after a mutated form of the virus was found on mink farms.
There were concerns that the mutated variant could threaten the effectiveness of future vaccines.
